Todays task was given to me by Julie Brook who suggested an exercise that would encourage me to explore the city through drawing.
With my drawing board bound to my back I set out across the city, receiving many curios glances and sideways looks on the way.
The essence of place?:
Lightning conductor; connectivity
Church steeple; conductivity
and finally, a small fragment of text left blowing in the wind.
One of the most interesting aspects of this exercise turned out to be the public engagement encountered on route. When you move out of the art-centric environment you are suddenly asked a new set of difficult questions:
– Why are you drawing that [nondescript corner of pavement, old fag end and piece of moss]?
– Well, I think its interesting. [Oh, I wasn’t expecting to actually be asked what I’m doing here]
