Rachael Didsbury and I traveled to the heart of the Flow Country in Sutherland. Once covered in swathes of pine forest, this huge expanse of wetland is a slowly thickening blanket of peat, heather and sphagnum moss. Recent attempts to establish pine plantations here have been unsuccessful as drainage is near to impossible. Instead the landscape is managed by roving herds or deer that mow down any saplings that might have established themselves in this saturated environment.
