It has been a pleasure to meet Timespan’s current artist in residence, Stephen Hurrell.

Stephens recent video work Dead Reckoning questions our relationship with the North Sea. Beneath the ocean’s surface a dolphin’s eye view accompanies an eerily rhythmic soundscape, this is juxtaposed with panoramic encounters with the towering industrial infrastructure of the oil and renewable energy industries.

Having never seen a North Sea oil rig up close before, the image of its towering, crumbling hulk is surprisingly shocking, pointing both to surreal nature of the human relationship to the ‘natural’ and to ecological debates surrounding climate change.

Stephen has also worked with Dr. Ian Mackinnon and Ruth Brennan to produce Mapping the Sea: Barra. See Cape Farewell
